Landscapes of Slovenia - Brian Maguire

Bangor Photographic Society welcomed Brian Maguire from CPACamera Club on Friday evening for an inspiring presentation showcasing his photographic adventures in Slovenia. Through a stunning collection of images, Brian transported members to a landscape of picturesque churches, dramatic mountains, mist-covered forests and tranquil lakes.

Brian began by sharing a few facts about Slovenia, including the remarkable number of churches throughout the country, estimated at around 3,000. These became the main focus of his two photographic trips different years and seasons, one in October and another in April, with each visit offering different opportunities.

The mountainous terrain creates ideal conditions for atmospheric mist, particularly in autumn. April also provided misty conditions, while melting snow added interest to the mountain landscapes. Brian’s photographs beautifully captured these changing conditions, using layers of mist, soft light and dramatic scenery to create images full of depth and atmosphere.

Members heard how much planning went into both trips. Brian used Google Maps, Instagram and other photography platforms to research locations and identify potential viewpoints. He marked numerous locations on his maps, many featuring churches that he hoped to photograph. Some journeys involved travelling considerable distances and getting up extremely early to reach a location in time for the best light.

Patience was clearly essential, as Brian spent considerable time chasing the light over churches, lakes, forests and mountains. He also revisited many locations from his first trip, discovering fresh photographic opportunities in different weather and lighting conditions.

Among the locations featured were Sv. Lenart Church, photographed in the warm glow of sunset, Sv. Tomaž Church and a church in Kranj, where power lines presented an additional compositional challenge. Kapelica Matere Božje, with its winding road, provided another striking subject, demonstrating how leading lines can draw the viewer into a landscape.

Brian also brought a drone, allowing him to capture the scenery from a completely different perspective. Particularly impressive were aerial images taken at sunrise, when forest trees cast long shadows across the mist below, creating beautiful patterns of light and shade. Other photographs showcased hilltop churches set against towering mountains and golden skies, illustrating how careful composition and timing can transform a scene.

Despite encountering some challenging conditions, Brian succeeded in producing a remarkable collection of photographs. His presentation highlighted the importance of research, preparation, patience and perseverance in landscape photography.

Bangor Photographic Society thanks Brian for sharing his experiences and outstanding images, providing members with an enjoyable evening and plenty of inspiration for their own photographic adventures.
